</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Smith is making "good strides" in his recovery, according to NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora. Much has been made of Smith missing time with new starter Matt Moore, but the two have been practicing together for three years. We're not limiting expectations for Smith's fantasy production this year.

There's little doubt Smith will be back as much as two weeks before the opener, and he has extra incentive against the Giants. Safety Michael Johnson laid the hit on him that resulted in his original broken arm late last season. "I'm going after him," Smith said. Johnson should be shaking in his cleats. Seriously.

Smith is already back on the practice, though he's not yet in full pads. The Panthers will likely hold him out of all preseason action, but he's obviously well ahead of schedule. Smith is a legit top-12 fantasy option this year.

Steve Smith - WR - Panthers Panthers WR Steve Smith is in an air cast to protect his high ankle sprain this week and will not play against the Bears.
Some Bears beat writers have expressed surprise that Smith didn't practice Wednesday. He never had a shot at doing so, and isn't going to play on Sunday. In a best case scenario, Smith would return after his Week 6 bye. October 6 - 4:09 p.m. ET

Steve Smith - WR - Panthers The Rock Hill Herald believes the Panthers will "probably be without" Steve Smith (high ankle sprain) this week against the 49ers.
We haven't heard from the Panthers themselves since Smith was ruled out in Week 5, but high ankle sprains can take up to 4-6 weeks to heal. Check back later in the week for an update, but those setting their lineups early shouldn't count on Smith as a WR3 until next week at the earliest. October 19 - 9:13 p.m. ET

The Gaston Gazette confirms that Smith "is expected to play" in Week 7 against San Francisco. "I feel like I’m healthy," said Smitty. "I’m out of the boot and I don’t have much pain so I’m able to move around. I feel good." The 49ers rank 11th against the pass, but have given up nine passing TDs through six games. Consider Smith a WR2 heading into the matchup.

Smith is now fully expected to play against the 49ers on Sunday, barring a late-week setback. In games Matt Moore has started over the past few seasons, Smith has averaged nearly 90 yards and a touchdown. Don't be afraid to start him as a WR2 this week.

He under contract through 2012, but is clearly frustrated with his role and the direction of the team. The uncertainty surrounding the CBA complicates matters, as the Panthers can't make player moves until an agreement is reached. For now, we expect to see Smith back in Carolina.
